State Of The Scene
The state of the scene in Florida is not strong. There's exception to this issue, but largely the scene in Florida does not share the prevalence and relevance that other acts, foreign and domestic have. Traffic to shows is down, as well as to most websites the nation over.
The problem is not a decline in the interest of Florida Death Metal, or a lack of good bands in the state. The problem is a decline in the marketing and promotion of events and bands in Florida. Too many bands and smaller promoters have been screwed by larger promoters and venues to foster a scene representative of the scene that started Death Metal to prominence in the late eighties and early nineties.
The solution, is to be more cost efficient with promotion and execution of events. The scene in Florida has always centered around shows. The music might seem to be the major draw to Florida Death Metal, but it is actually the show that makes Florida what it is. Shows are what draws musicians and fans together to try, and explore new styles and bands that otherwise would go largely unnoticed.
We, at FLDM are certainly dedicated to resolving this issue. That plays a large part of why we're stoked to work with Morbid Subculture to start promoting shows in a way that doesn't screw artists or venues or fans. Shows that charge $25 at the door and $6 for a beer are better suited to the Steely Dan crowd, not to fans of Malevolent Creation.
To foster this, we've recently opened up our site so any registered user can submit event information to the site. We hope that you, will help all of us know what's going on in the state. Getting us out to shows, is what will keep Florida in the Death Metal forefront for years to come.
